Every person has a fear of flying to some degree and television shows like LOST do not help put anybody’s minds at ease. Who would not be scared of being miles up I the air in a cylindrical tube, with a limited amount of space that you have to share with complete strangers, and not to mention the amount of flammable liquid that is present all around the plane. This completely justifies the clenched fists, profuse sweating, muttered prayers, loud prayers and hyperventilation that is ever present on the shortest domestic to longest international flight.
The condition is called aviophobia or aerophobia, the fear of flying and it is shared by one in every 6 adults. Statistically you have more of a chance of dying from the food onboard a plane than being involved in an accident. This should stifle the fears of those passengers that fear air travel and this would only mean there would be a lot more left over airplane meals. Unfortunately it takes a lot more than one statistic to convince passengers that fear flying that they are actually using the second safest mode of transport in the world. It would not even help to convince them that the most dangerous part of their journey is the drive to and from the airport.

Here are some tips for those who are scared of flying:
1. If you can, ask for a seat in the front of the cabin when you check in. The least amount of turbulence is felt there.
2. If you are scared, tell people about it rather than keep it bottled up. It is better to let people support you than deal with it alone.
3. Try take bigger planes and shorter flights if your fear is very intense.
4. Keep your mind occupied by reading or watching movies. Distraction will help your body to relax.
5. Breathe deeply as it will calm u down. The bag for vomiting found in the pouch in the seat in front of you can be used to blow into for hyperventilation.
6. Avoid caffeine products. It will only make you more anxious. Drink liquids as you do not want to dehydrate. A whiskey are glass of wine can take the edge off but do not get drunk.
7. Do not discuss, think about, read about or watch anything to do with a plane crash.
8. Listen to peaceful music to calm your nerves.
9. Snap an elastic band against your arm when you start stressing. It will snap you out of the anxious state.

10. There are classes you can take to help you deal with your fears. The final test is an actual plane trip.
